Shilajit Dosage: How Much Should Men Take Daily?

THE SHORT VERSION: Take 500 mg of purified shilajit a day with food. That's the daily amount used in the human research. Timing matters less than consistency. Morning, pre-training, or evening all work if you stick with it. Give it at least 8 to 12 weeks and talk to your doctor first if you take medication or have been told to limit minerals.

Get the dose right and shilajit is simple. Get it wrong and you're either wasting it or taking more than the research supports. This guide gives you the research-backed daily amount, how to split it, when to take it, what to stack it with, and who should skip it altogether.

How Much Shilajit Should You Take Per Day?

Take 500 mg a day. That's the total daily amount used in the key human trials on purified shilajit.[1][2][3]

The studies delivered that amount two ways. The testosterone and muscle-tissue trials used 250 mg twice daily.[1][3] The strength trial used 500 mg once daily, and it found the 500 mg dose worked better than 250 mg for retaining strength under fatigue.*[2] Both deliver the same 500 mg daily total.

There's no evidence that more is better. Short-term use at up to 500 mg a day is considered possibly safe, but long-term data are limited.[4] Stick with the dose that's actually been studied.

Is It Better to Take 500 mg Once or 250 mg Twice?

Both are research-backed. Choose the one you'll actually stick with.

  • Once daily (500 mg): simplest. One capsule, one habit. This is the protocol behind the strength and connective-tissue findings.*[2]

  • Twice daily (250 mg + 250 mg): the protocol behind the testosterone and muscle-tissue research.[1][3] It works if you already take supplements with two meals, but it needs a 250 mg serving. Prime Labs Shilajit is a single 500 mg capsule, built for once daily.

No study has compared the two schedules directly. For most men, once daily wins on consistency, and consistency is what the research rewarded.

What's the Best Time of Day to Take Shilajit?

Whenever you'll take it every single day. Timing hasn't been studied, and shilajit isn't a stimulant, so there's no crash to plan around.

  • Morning: with breakfast. Easiest to build into a routine.

  • Pre-training: 30–60 minutes before your workout, if the gym is your anchor habit.

  • Evening: with dinner, if mornings are chaotic.

Pick one slot and hold it. The benefits in research came from daily use over 8 to 12 weeks, not from perfect timing.[1][2]

Should You Take Shilajit With Food?

Yes. Take it with a meal and a glass of water.

Food helps you tie the dose to an existing habit, and it may be easier on the stomach. There's one mineral caveat. Shilajit is naturally mineral-dense, with processed forms containing roughly 10–15% minerals.[5] Avoid taking it alongside high-dose iron or calcium supplements, so your total mineral intake doesn't pile up.

How Much Resin Equals a 500 mg Dose?

There's no reliable conversion, which is the problem with resin. A "pea-sized" portion varies with the batch, the temperature, and the scoop.

Resin moisture and density change from jar to jar, so the same-looking amount can deliver very different doses. If you want to match the 500 mg used in research, a measured capsule is the straightforward way to do it. More on that in Shilajit Resin vs Capsules: Which Form Is Right for You.

How Long Should You Take Shilajit Before Judging Results?

At least 8 to 12 weeks. Shilajit is a daily supplement, not a quick hit.

  • Week 8: strength retention under fatigue was measured at this point in research.*[2]

  • Weeks 8–12: stay consistent. Every research benefit came from uninterrupted daily use.

  • Day 90: healthy testosterone support within the normal range was measured at this point in research.*[1]

Results may vary. For the full evidence behind each benefit, see Shilajit Benefits for Men: What the Evidence Supports.

What Can You Stack Shilajit With?

Shilajit plays well with a training stack. Its research benefits are strength under fatigue and connective-tissue support, which makes it an easy add to a basic training stack.*[2]

  1. With creatine: take the creatine daily as usual and the shilajit with a meal. They work on different systems, and there's no need to time them together. See our Creatine guide.

  2. With a pre-workout: take the shilajit 30–60 minutes before training alongside the pre-workout, or keep it with a meal. Shilajit adds no caffeine.

  3. With a testosterone-support formula: check the label first. Some formulas already contain shilajit, so don't double up past 500 mg a day in total.

Keep the rest of your stack simple, and add one thing at a time so you know what's working.

What Does a Simple Daily Routine Look Like?

Anchor the capsule to something you already do every day. Here are two templates that work.

Training-day routine

  1. Breakfast: shilajit with water and food.

  2. Pre-workout: pre-workout, if you use one. Your shilajit is already in from breakfast.

  3. Post-workout or any meal: the creatine, as usual.

Rest-day routine

  1. Breakfast: shilajit with water and food, same as always.

  2. Any meal: creatine, if you take it daily.

Same time, every day, training or not. The research benefits came from daily use, including rest days.[1][2]

What If You Already Take a Multivitamin or Mineral Supplement?

You can usually keep it, but look at the label. Shilajit adds minerals of its own, so avoid pairing it with high-dose iron or calcium supplements.

Processed shilajit contains roughly 10–15% minerals, mainly potassium, calcium, and magnesium.[5] At 500 mg a day that's a modest amount, but it adds to whatever your multivitamin and diet already supply. If you take a standalone iron or high-dose calcium supplement, or you've been told to limit minerals, check with your doctor first.[6]

Who Should Avoid Shilajit?

Talk to your doctor before starting shilajit if any of the following apply. For some men, the right dose is none.

  • You take prescription medication or have a medical condition. Supplements can interact with both.[6]

  • You've been told to limit iron or other minerals.

  • You have high blood pressure or a history of allergic reactions. Increased blood pressure, dizziness, and allergic reactions are listed as possible effects.[4]

  • You're scheduled for surgery or monitoring your hormones. Tell your doctor you're taking it.

And whatever your situation, only take purified, third-party-tested shilajit. Raw shilajit can contain heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, and there's no way to know without lab testing.[4] Our checklist is in Best Shilajit Supplement: 6 Quality Markers That Matter.

The Approach We Don't Recommend: Megadosing Shilajit

Don't take more than 500 mg a day to "speed things up." There's no evidence it works faster, and the safety data beyond 500 mg a day are thin.[4]

The key human trials all used 500 mg a day.[1][2][3] Going beyond that means guessing, and with a mineral-dense substance you're also stacking up more of everything in it.[5] If you aren't noticing anything at week four, that's expected. The research timeline runs 8 to 12 weeks. Stay the course at the studied dose.

FAQs

Can I take shilajit every day?
Yes. Daily use is how it was studied, over 8 to 12 weeks.[1][2] Long-term data beyond that are limited.[4]
Should I cycle shilajit?
No study has tested cycling. If you plan to take it long-term, check in with your doctor periodically.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Just take your next dose as normal. Don't double up.
Can I take shilajit on an empty stomach?
You can, but we recommend taking it with a meal. It's easier on the stomach and easier to remember.
Does shilajit break a fast?
A 500 mg capsule adds negligible calories, but we still recommend taking it with a meal to anchor the habit.
How long does one bottle of Prime Labs Shilajit last?
Sixty days. Each bottle has 60 capsules, and each capsule is the full 500 mg daily serving. One bottle covers 8 weeks of daily use; two cover a 90-day routine.
Is 1,000 mg of shilajit better than 500 mg?
There's no evidence it is. The human trials used 500 mg a day in total.[1][2]
